Masaka City Woman MP petition hearing adjourned to September 30

MASAKA — The High Court in Masaka has adjourned the hearing of a petition challenging the election of State Minister for Local Government Justine Nameere as Masaka City Woman MP to September 30 and October 1.

Justice Bernard Namanya adjourned the case after allowing video evidence presented by the legal team of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Rose Nalubowa to be admitted into the court record.

Nalubowa filed the petition challenging Nameere’s election victory following a dispute over the results of the January 2026 parliamentary election.

The contest initially saw Nalubowa declared the winner before a recount altered the outcome and handed victory to Nameere.

During the latest proceedings, Nameere’s lawyers, led by Sam Ssekyewa, objected to the video evidence and an affidavit sworn by Deogratious Bukenya.

The defence questioned the admissibility of the evidence and argued that Bukenya lacked the necessary court authorisation and expertise to provide evidence on the matters contained in his affidavit.

The court nevertheless admitted the video evidence, allowing it to form part of the material to be considered as the petition proceeds.

The petition centres on allegations concerning the conduct of the election and the subsequent recount that changed the declared result. Nameere has denied the allegations and, through her lawyers, opposed the petition.

The Electoral Commission and the Masaka City Returning Officer are also respondents in the case.

The next hearings are expected to focus on the continued examination and cross-examination of witnesses as both sides present their cases before Justice Namanya.

Proceedings will resume on September 30 and continue on October 1.
