Nine people have been killed after a Learjet 60 business aircraft plunged into a residential area in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States, with newly reported air traffic control recordings revealing the terrifying final moments inside the cockpit.
Β
The aircraft crashed on Sunday, November 1, at approximately 12:50 pm local time near Cresthaven, in the Greenacres area of Palm Beach County.
Β
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the jet had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
Β
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard had died.

Β
Air traffic control recordings captured the crew reporting moderate turbulence and icing conditions before the situation deteriorated rapidly.
Β
The pilot reportedly told controllers that the aircraft was experiencing icing, with an outside air temperature of minus 47 degrees Celsius.
Β
The crew subsequently reported picking up precipitation and requested to climb in search of better conditions.
Β
Moments later, the aircraft began losing altitude at an alarming rate.
Β
The pilot transmitted:
Β
Β \"We\'re descending 8,000 β Mayday, Mayday! We\'re descending 10,000 feet per minute.\"
Β
The situation became even more desperate as the descent accelerated.
Β
The pilot reportedly declared an emergency and informed controllers:
Β
Β \"We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute.\"
Β
Another chilling transmission followed:
Β
Β \"We\'re going to crash into the ground.\"

According to the recordings, the aircraft\'s descent rate subsequently reached approximately 22,000 feet per minute, while the crew reported that the jet was banking at 60 degrees.
Β
One of the final cockpit communications included the words:
Β
Β \"Look outside... Holy f**k, we\'re out of time!\"
Β
The transmission ended shortly afterwards.
Β
Flight-tracking data reportedly showed the aircraft\'s vertical descent rate briefly exceeding 32,000 feet per minute β an extraordinary rate of descent.

The Learjet plunged into the ground beside Military Trail, a busy six-lane road, creating a large crater and scattering burning wreckage across the area.
Β
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash footage as resembling a missile falling from the sky, followed by a massive explosion.
Β
Approximately 600 residents from a nearby mobile-home community were evacuated as emergency responders battled the aftermath.
Β
The impact also damaged local water infrastructure, while authorities warned that the affected road could remain closed for an extended period.

Β
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Β
Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, turbulence and reported icing conditions were among the factors being examined.
Β
The identities of the nine victims had not been publicly released in the initial reports.
Β
The aircraft went down approximately 14 kilometres from President Donald Trump\'s Mar-a-Lago resort. Trump had reportedly departed the nearby airport aboard Air Force One about an hour before the crash.
Β
The recordings have provided a disturbing account of the crew\'s final struggle, but investigators must now establish what caused the aircraft to descend so rapidly.
